A Chicago man is facing felony retail theft charges after Cook County sheriff’s police say a GPS tracker hidden in stolen athleticwear helped investigators locate him on a Green Line train.

Lululemon theft

The backstory:

According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, Lululemon loss prevention contacted the department around 10:15 a.m. Aug. 18 after a man allegedly stole dozens of items from the store in the 900 block of West Randolph Street.

Investigators said one of the stolen items contained a GPS tracker, which showed the merchandise traveling along the Green Line.

An investigator boarded the train ahead of the tracker’s location and eventually found the man, identified as 65-year-old Frederick Campbell, sitting aboard the train with a large bag, authorities said.

Campbell was taken into custody and removed from the train. Investigators recovered $4,620 worth of merchandise from the bag, according to police.

Authorities said further investigation linked Campbell to an earlier theft at the same Lululemon store in which more than $3,800 worth of merchandise was allegedly taken.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office later charged Campbell with two counts of felony retail theft.

What's next:

Campbell was ordered released from custody Wednesday following his first court appearance.
