Child found dead in Homer Glen swimming pool

A 17-month-old boy died Sunday evening after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in southwest suburban Homer Glen.

Deputies arrived at the home in the 14000 block of South Erin Court in Homer Glen at 7:26 p.m. and learned that during a family gathering for Father’s Day, the family went swimming then went back inside the home, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

They lost track of 17-month-old David Garcia Jr. “for a minute,” and his mother went outside and found him unresponsive laying in the pool on top of the partially submerged solar cover, according to the sheriff’s office.

She began performing CPR until paramedics arrived and took over, according to the sheriff’s office. The boy, of Plainfield, was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead at 8:15 p.m. Sunday.

The preliminary results of an autopsy Monday were consistent with drowning, according to the Will County coroner’s office.

The sheriff’s office called the drowning a “tragic accident” and said no charges are expected to be filed.
