Feds: Inmate committed suicide at Metropolitan Correctional Center

CHICAGO (STMW) - An inmate at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in the Loop committed suicide in his cell Sunday morning, authorities said.

Alex G. Gilbert, 37, was found unresponsive in his cell at the federal prison at 71 W. Van Buren at 10:40 a.m., according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Prison staff immediately initiated life-saving measures, but Gilbert was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Gilbert arrived at the MCC on Nov. 13, 2013 as a pretrial inmate awaiting arraignment on a weapons offense, according to the DOJ statement.

His death is an apparent suicide, accordion to the statement. The FBI was notified and an investigation will be conducted.
