A driver struck an Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car early Sunday morning on Interstate 55 near Route 83 in Downers Grove.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. while the trooper’s vehicle was parked with its emergency lights activated in the right lane as the trooper investigated an earlier traffic incident.

The driver of the Toyota, 29-year-old Emmanuel Adantey of Bolingbrook, was uninjured but received citations for violating the state's Move Over Law, driving too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Sunday's crash is one of 25 Move Over Law-related collisions involving ISP vehicles so far in 2024, resulting in 12 trooper injuries, officials said. ISP reported 21 such crashes in 2023 and 25 in 2022, with seven and 13 troopers injured in those years, respectively.

Under Illinois’ Move Over Law, also known as "Scott’s Law," drivers must slow down and switch lanes when approaching stationary emergency or hazard vehicles displaying activated lights.

First-time offenders could be fined between $250 and $10,000. If a violation causes injury, the driver’s license will be suspended for six months to two years.
