Jaguar Land Rover is recalling nearly 94,000 vehicles in the United States because a defect could cause the rearview camera image to fail to appear on the display screen, federal safety regulators said Friday.

What we know:

The recall affects 93,997 vehicles, including certain 2022-2026 Land Rover Range Rover models, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Dig deeper:

NHTSA said insufficient drain holes in the rearview camera housing may allow water to become trapped, potentially damaging the camera and preventing the image from displaying when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

A malfunctioning rearview camera can reduce a driver's visibility behind the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.

To fix the issue, dealers will drill additional drain holes in the underside of the tailgate trim to improve water drainage. Dealers also will inspect and replace the rearview camera if necessary, NHTSA said.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by the automaker, and repairs will be performed free of charge.
