Lake County, Indiana authorities warn of phony arrest warrant scam
CHICAGO - Authorities in Lake County, Indiana, issued an alert Friday, warning the public about a scam involving fake arrest warrants.
What we know:
In a recent case, a Lake County Courthouse employee was targeted with a fraudulent warrant demanding $8,500, according to Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
The fake document featured a State of Indiana seal at the top and a sheriff's department star near the bottom. It threatened the employee with arrest for failing to appear in court unless $8,500 in bail was paid.
What you can do:
The sheriff's office urges anyone who receives a similar document to avoid contacting the sender or attempting to make any payment.
Sheriff Martinez stressed that neither the Lake County Sheriff's Department nor the Lake County Courts contact individuals by phone or mail to demand payment for arrest warrants.
