Several streets were shut down in the Loop on Tuesday afternoon, clogging downtown traffic after a construction crew hit an unused gas main.

The crew hit the main at State and Madison, according to Chicago Police and Fire Media Affairs.

State was closed between Lake and Adams; and Madison was closed between Michigan and Dearborn, police said. Traffic was reopened by about 4:40 p.m.

No injuries were reported, according to Fire Media. The utility company is handling the situation.

The CTA No. 6, 10, 29, 36, 62, 124 and 146 buses were rerouted near the Loop but are now running normal routes, according to a commuter alert. Riders should allow extra travel time.
