Man charged with reckless homicide in Dolton crash
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A south suburban man is facing several charges after he crashed his car early Sunday in Dolton, killing one of his passengers and injuring three others.
Demetrius Sorrells, 24, was charged with reckless homicide, aggravated DUI resulting in death, aggravated DUI resulting in great bodily harm, and several other traffic offenses, according to Dolton Police Chief Robert Collins.
The crash happened about 1 a.m. Sunday after the vehicle was spotted speeding north on Greenwood Road, then passed Chicago Road, where it was going the wrong way on a one-way street, Collins said.
The driver, later identified as Sorrells, lost control of the car, which struck a dumpster and another parked car, Collins said.
Two of the four passengers were ejected, Collins said. John Kyles III, who would have turned 20 years old on Oct. 12, was dead at the scene.
Two other men were in critical condition and a third was also injured, Collins said. They were all taken to different hospitals.
After the crash, two pistols were found in the car, and another was found among items thrown from the car during the crash, Collins said.
Sorrells, of Riverdale, was ordered held on a $2.3 million bond, Collins said. He had a suspended Illinois driver’s license and had pleaded guilty earlier this year in another DUI case.
