Man dies after jumping onto I-80 from Tinley Park overpass

A Tinley Park man killed himself Wednesday by jumping from an overpass onto Interstate 80 in southwest suburban Tinley Park, according to authorities.

At 10:01 a.m., the 30-year-old jumped from the 80th Avenue overpass onto the eastbound lanes of the expressway, according to a spokeswoman for Illinois State Police District 5. The man was hit by multiple vehicles after landing in the lanes.

He was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later pronounced dead, state police said. An autopsy Thursday ruled his death was a suicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

All eastbound lanes were closed after the incident, but reopened by 2:30 p.m., according to state police and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

State police were still investigating Thursday afternoon.
