SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A manhunt was underway Monday night after an Illinois State Police trooper suffered a neck injury during a struggle for a gun on northbound Interstate 294 near south suburban Harvey.

About 7 p.m. at the Halsted Street Toll Plaza, the trooper stopped a “suspicious person” who pointed a gun at him when confronted, according to an ISP statement.

The two tussled for the weapon, which went off several times, state police said. The trooper suffered a neck injury but was not shot. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening.

The suspect ran away and was still at large as of 8 p.m. Police were searching for a black male wearing a construction vest and black jeans. It was unknown if he was still armed.

Anyone with information should call ISP at (630) 241-6800, extension 5028.

Hours earlier, a northwest Indiana shoplifting suspect killed himself after a chase ended on I-294 in South Holland, police said.
