Mother fatally struck, child injured by possible DUI driver in North Hills

A woman was killed and her child was injured in North Hills when a vehicle struck parked cars near them, authorities said Monday.

The crash was reported at 10:26 p.m. Sunday at 8815 North Woodley Ave., said Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the child was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Stewart said. Police added that the youth was displaying stable vital signs Monday morning.

The mother and her child may have been between the parked cars when the crash occurred, said Sgt. D. Delgado of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division.

The driver remained at the scene and was detained by officers pending an investigation, Delgado said, adding that  DUI is a possibility. The child remained critical but stabilized Monday morning, he said.
