CHICAGO (AP) - Mourners are paying tribute to a Chicago firefighter who died after falling down an elevator shaft while battling a warehouse fire.

An honor guard of Chicago firefighters in formal uniforms carried the casket of 42-year-old Daniel Capuano Thursday to a chapel at St. Rita High School for the visitation. The funeral is 10 a.m. Friday at the same Chicago chapel.

The 15-year department veteran fell Monday as he searched for people and the fire's source. The husband and father of three died hours later.

City Building Department officials say the building's owners lacked proper permits for removing the elevator. City attorneys have gone to court to have the building demolished, alleging safety issues.

The Cook County state's attorney's office is reviewing facts to determine whether prosecution could be warranted.
