Murder suspect arrested after pursuit, crash in Auburn Gresham

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A man wanted for murder in west suburban Brookfield was arrested Tuesday after he led Chicago Police officers on a chase that ended with a crash, leaving four people injured in the South Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Jermaine Douglas, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, being an armed habitual criminal, and aggravated fleeing from police at speeds more than 21 mph over the speed limit, all felonies, according to Chicago Police and Cook County sheriff’s office records. He was also cited for disregarding a stop sign, disregarding a traffic control light, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

About 11:30 a.m., Chicago Lawn District officers on patrol spotted a vehicle sought in connection with a homicide in Brookfield, and attempted to stop the vehicle in the 1700 block of West 65th Street, police said.

The vehicle sped away and committed several traffic violations before crashing into multiple vehicles in the 8700 block of South Ashland, police said. The chase lasted about 10 minutes.

Douglas was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized, police said. A handgun was recovered from the scene.

A 4-year-old boy and his mother were also taken to Christ in good condition, police said. Another female was treated and released from Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park.

Another driver and passenger involved in the crash refused treatment at the scene, police said.

Douglas, who lives in the 7100 block of South Whipple, was ordered held without bond during a hearing Wednesday, according to the sheriff’s office. His next court date is scheduled for Nov. 21 in Maywood.
