Police: Woman robbed, then sexually assaulted in Horner Park
FOX 32 NEWS - A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized after she was attacked and sexually assaulted on the North Side.
Chicago Police are telling residents to be alert after a man announced a robbery and ended up sexually assaulting the victim.
It happened on Campbell Avenue, one block south of Montrose Avenue in the Horner Park neighborhood.
The block where it happened is typically busy but it was raining Sunday night and neighbors said the streets were empty because people were staying indoors.
With the light of day, police canvassed the Horner Park neighborhood, hoping to stop the suspect from striking again. People walking their dogs near Montrose and Campbell say they had no fear 24 hours ago, but now it's different. Joel Levit said he thinks people need to watch their backs and stick together.
"But they are getting caught alone, unfortunately they're young females, and they've got their iPhones out and they've got their debit card in their pocket and you know, you need to be aware," said Levit.
Just after 9 p.m. on Sunday night, police said a woman exited a cab. As she walked down Campbell, a man grabbed her from behind but her money and cell phone wasn't all he wanted. Police say he dragged the woman to an alley where he sexually assaulted her.
"Well I feel disgusted and upset," said Georgia Apostal, neighbor.
Georgia Apostal, a long-time resident, said he attack has startled her.
"I've been here 60 years and this is the first time something like that, if it hapened here, I don't know and I didn't hear about it," said Apostal.
There's no one in custody yet and neighbors are on edge.
"You don't hear much, I mean you leave your garage door open, you're asking for trouble. You know I lock my doors," said Levit.
The suspect was said to be wearing a dark-colored sweat shirt. He fled westbound from the scene.
