Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in Joliet, suspect's vehicle found abandoned: police

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash Saturday night in southwest suburban Joliet.

Officers responded to the scene near the intersection of 4th Avenue and Chicago Street on the city’s Near East Side around 9:30 p.m. where they found a 62-year-old man lying on the sidewalk, police said. The man was critically injured and taken to Ascension Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

He later died at the hospital. The Will County Coroner's Office identified him as Robert Redmond Jr., of Joliet.

Witnesses told police the victim was crossing Chicago Street heading east when he was hit by a silver sedan traveling north. Officers obtained surveillance footage of the crash which showed the sedan traveling at a high rate of speed and hitting the victim, police said.

Authorities searched for the silver sedan, which had front-end damage. As of around 5 p.m., Joliet PD said they received a call from the Will County Sheriff's Police, who found the vehicle unoccupied.

The vehicle was towed by Joliet police.

The Joliet Police Traffic Unit is investigating the crash and trying to identify the suspect driver of the silver sedan.
