ROUND LAKE (STMW) - Authorities are investigating whether remains found in an abandoned shed Saturday afternoon in north suburban Round Lake are human.

About 2:45 p.m., a property caretaker found what appeared to be a human skull while removing items from an abandoned shed in the 33100 block of North Fairfield Road in unincorporated Round Lake, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

The Lake County coroner’s office responded and collected the possible remains, all of which appear to be “extremely aged,” according to the statement.

The remains will be examined by a forensic pathologist, forensic odontologist and anthropologist to determine if they are human.

The sheriff’s office is investigating how the items came to be in the abandoned shed.
