Powerball jackpot reaches $301 million

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Your coworkers may be finding reasons to sneak out of the office this week. And chances are, they are making a run to buy a lottery ticket.

After no one matched the winning numbers Sunday night, the Powerball jackpot has reached $301 million. Now, the next Powerball drawing will take place on Wednesday night.

Wednesday morning, Chicagoans were already flocking to convenience stores to purchase a chance at becoming a millionaire. And store employees say they anticipate even more players as the day goes on.

However, Powerball Illinois reps tell FOX 32 News although Powerball is a multi-state game, if there is a winner in Illinois, they will not get paid until there is a state budget. The Illinois Comptroller cannot write out checks for more than $25,000 until the budget is complete.

It also means the state cannot put forth their portion of the pot until the comptroller has permission to pay. The winner would be owed money by the state.

Wednesday's jackpot is the second largest this year. Back in February, the Powerball jackpot reached $564 million.
