School where officer stopped shooter celebrates graduation

DIXON, Illinois (Fox 32 News) - Students at an Illinois high school where a shooting was stopped last week by a school resource officer celebrated graduation on Sunday in relief and gratitude.

On Wednesday, Matthew Milby, 19, brought a gun to school. He came into the gym during graduation practice and fired at a coach. Milby was shot was shot by school resource officer Mark Dallas.

Senior class vice president Emma Krull address Dallas, who was on stage during Sunday's ceremony.

"Today would not have turned out the same without you being here,so from the class of 2018 we love you, you are our hero," Krull said.

Each senior shook hands with Dallas as they accepted their diplomas. Dallas' own son also graduated.

"I never would have thought, 'Oh, it's going to happen in Dixon,' and it happens at graduation practice," graduating senior Ashley Jones said.

"I was just very happy to have all my classmates together because imagine if something would've escalated more than it did," graduating senior Madison Howard said.
