Trial begins in 2012 killing of 7-year-old Chicago girl

7-year-old Heaven Sutton was killed in 2012 by a bullet fired in a gang fight while she was playing near her West Side Chicago home.

On Monday, the trial of Jerrell Dorsey began with a prosecutor saying two bullets hit their mark during the shooting, a man who survived and Heaven Sutton.

In her opening statement, prosecutor Nina Ricci said Dorsey was a gang member who was shooting at a member of a rival gang on June 27, 2012. Ricci said that night should have been one that fades from memory, but it hasn't and never will be.

Defense attorney Michael Walsh urged jurors not to let sympathy for Heaven's family affect their judgment.

Heaven's brother Malik Ellis, who was 15 at the time, testified his sister was in their home's front yard when Dorsey emerged from a gangway and fired shots at another man.
