Vigil held for 6 murdered family members
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -- Three days after Chicago police found six murdered family members, they continue to search for the killer or killers.
Police found the bodies in different parts of the home near 57th and South California in the city’s Gage Park neighborhood. They were asked to do a well-being check after one of them missed two days of work.
Noe and Rosa Martinez, their son Noe Martinez, Jr. and two young boys Leonardo and Alexis Cruz were found all stabbed to death.
The boys' mother, Herminia Maria Martinez was found shot and killed.
On Sunday, the victims’ family gathered with the community to pray for their loved ones.
“We are here to assist this family in an unfortunate journey that they didn't ask to be a part of,” said Dawn Valenti, a Chicago Crisis Responder who spoke on the family’s behalf.
Chicago police said this weekend they are working to solve this horrific crime that has left the community rattled.
"I can reassure you that our detectives are working around the clock along with other agencies, federal partners and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office,” said Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy.
Valenti says the funeral expenses have already been paid for and plans are in the works for services.
“The bodies are beings shipped off to Mexico as far as we know there is going to be a service here, but that whole thing is covered, everything is covered there,” said Valenti.
The memorial in front of the home continues to grow as each day passes, more pictures, candles and memories with the victims.
As the community continues to cope with the tragedy, the mystery remains, what happened inside the Martinez home and why?
Valenti said plans are in the works for a Chicago services before the bodies are sent to family in Mexico.
