The Chicago Blackhawks reportedly operated as the middleman in a blockbuster three-team trade in the NHL on Friday night.
The 'Hawks have sent winger Taylor Hall to the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade involving the Hurricanes, Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche, the team announced on Friday evening.
Hall was a healthy scratch for Friday night's game between Chicago and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Hurricanes acquired the prize of the trade: Colorado right-winger Mikko Rantanen.
Rantanen has scored 25 goals and recorded 64 points this season. The Blackhawks will get a 2025 third-round pick in return, which is the Blackhawks' original third-round pick which the team traded to Carolina for a 2024 third-round pick.
As part of the deal, the Blackhawks will retain half of Rantanen's cap hit, according to The Athletic's Scott Powers. Chicago will retain none of Hall's cap hit. Colorado will get Martin Necas and Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
Hall heads to Carolina where he'll get another change of scenery. He scored 24 points and nine goals in 46 games this season with the ‘Hawks. This will be Hall's seventh NHL team in his 15 seasons in the NHL. He won the 2018 Hart Trophy with the New Jersey Devils.
Hall was traded by the Bruins with Nick Foligno to Chicago in exchange for Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula. Hall injured his ACL in November 2023 and was working his way back into the ‘Hawks lineup. He was expected to provide a high-level scoring presence for then-rookie Connor Bedard. That never truly materialized in Bedard’s rookie season or so far in the 2024-2025 season.
