Helene left a trail of widespread damage across the U.S. Southeast, killing at least 120 people and hundreds of others still unaccounted for.

One Asheville, North Carolina resident sounded the alarm as his community battles the devastation left by Hurricane Helene, detailing the "apocalyptic weekend" as the death toll continues to rise while millions are left without power and water. 

Tropical Storm Kirk (formerly Tropical Depression 12) formed over the Atlantic Ocean Monday morning and is forecast to become a "large and powerful hurricane" later this week, the National Hurricane Center said.

The Southeast is still reeling from Hurricane Helene's deadly punch, but attention will soon need to return to the Caribbean as the tropics’ next act begins to brew, with steadily increasing odds of another tropical system developing within the next week. 

Helene's path of destruction has left at least 56 people dead and entire homes and neighborhoods washed away in the Appalachian Mountains.

Helene has caused more than 50 deaths and brought widespread flooding and destruction to Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee.

Van Dillen, a journalist from the Atlanta area, heard a woman's desperate cries for help during Hurricane Helene. She had driven into floodwaters and was trapped in her car before sunrise Friday.
