Chicago weather: Get ready for a cold start to 2025

It has been a soggy New Year's Eve with rain and even a few snowflakes mixing in at times on Tuesday.

The overall trend this evening will be for skies to dry out with temperatures in the lower 30s by midnight.

Overnight lows will drop into the upper 20s with a chance for a few stray snow showers. Wednesday will be cooler with partly sunny skies and highs near 30 degrees.

A weak system will pass south of Chicagoland on Thursday, bringing the possibility of light snow to the area. The best chance for a dusting to an inch will be near and south of I-80. Temperatures will top out near 30 degrees on Thursday afternoon.

Sunshine returns on Friday with highs only in the low to mid 20s. The cold air will linger into the upcoming weekend with highs in the lower 20s through Sunday.

There is a chance for snow showers Sunday into Monday, but it appears the heaviest of the snow will likely pass south of Chicagoland.
