A Chicago man was killed and another man was injured in a shooting at a south suburban nightclub early Monday, the first fatal shooting since last summer in Blue Island.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at the Premium 127 Club in the 1800 block of West 127th Street just before 1 a.m., according to a statement from Blue Island police.

Michael Goldsmith, 27, was taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, where he was pronounced dead at 1:39 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Goldsmith lived in the 500 block of West 14th Place.

A 40-year-old Chicago man also suffered a gunshot wound, police said.

“Anytime there is an incident that takes a life or critically injures someone, it is obviously tragic,” Deputy Police Chief Michael Cornell said in the statement.

“We are trying to piece together information that will give us an accurate picture of exactly what happened. Thankfully incidents like this in Blue Island are rare, but that doesn’t make it less disturbing,” Cornell said.

The incident is the first fatal shooting of 2016 in Blue Island, according to the statement. The only fatal shooting last year occurred in August.

The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force is assisting Blue Island police with the investigation.
