California woman killed in shark attack while snorkeling in the Bahamas
TORRANCE, Calif. (FOX 11) - A Torrance woman was reportedly killed in the Bahamas on Wednesday after being attacked by sharks while snorkeling with family.
The woman was identified as 21-year-old Jordan Lindsay, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, who said The Loyola Marymount University student was attacked by three sharks.
Police said shortly after 10 a.m. Lindsay along with her parents Mike and Kami Lindsay, brothers, sisters and female friend, went on an expedition in the water off Rose Island. The group left from the Long Warf Beach under the supervision of Sandy Toes whom they arranged the tour with.
Sometime after 2 p.m., while the group was in the water, a family member noticed three sharks circling the area.
Family members attempted to warm Lindsay about the sharks, but did not hear them, authorities said.
Her mother attempted to get Lindsay to shore but lost too much blood, it was reported.
Lindsay reportedly suffered fatal injuries that included a severed right arm and bites to her arms, legs and buttocks. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"The family is extremely distraught at this time," Royal Bahamas police said in a press release.
"We already miss her so much. She was so caring. She loved animals. It's ironic she would die getting attacked by a shark," her father said in an interview.
At this time, authorities do not know the depth of water the group was in at the time of the attack. They also do not know what type of sharks were involved in the attack.
"It is also unclear at this time the distance where the crew were snorkeling at from the mainland," Royal Bahamas police said in a statement.
Police investigators are in the process of getting additional information from the Sandy Tour Excursion Operators.
Efforts were being by the U.S. embassy to return Lindsay's body to California.
A GoFundMe has been set up to cover funeral expenses.
