Chicago Police seized nearly 100 guns in the city last weekend, including multiple automatic weapons.

The weekend’s roundup brought the total number of guns seized by CPD this year to more than 4,200, according to a statement from police. Police credited community organizations and gun buy-back events with helping the department confiscate the weapons.

The department also emphasized the damage that high-powered automatic weapons are doing to some of the city’s communities.

“These guns are built for a battlefield, and they have no business on our streets,” Supt. Eddie Johnson said in the statement. “While we will continue to proactively work to take guns off our streets, we need everyone to join us in our efforts to keep our neighborhoods safe and we need the rest of the criminal justice system to hold those who use these illegal guns accountable.”
