Gary numbers indicate drop in all major crimes but homicide

GARY, Ind. (AP) — New crime statistics show Gary has seen a decrease in reported rapes, assaults and burglaries, but homicides have remained about the same.

Numbers released by city officials show a decrease in all major categories for the second straight year. The officials say robberies, assaults, burglaries, larceny, auto theft and arsons dropped in 2015.

The Post-Tribune reports that the number of assaults, including shootings, stabbings and felony battery has dropped 50 percent since 2013. About 180 assaults were reported in 2015, compared to about 350 in 2014.

A news release issued by city officials says the number of reported rapes dropped from 44 in 2014 to 25 in 2015.

Gary had 50 homicides in 2015, compared to 51 homicides in 2014.
