Mundelein fatal crash: Woman, 24, dies in head-on collision with semi

A 24-year-old woman died early Tuesday following a head-on crash between her car and a semi-truck in suburban Mundelein.

The backstory:

Officers responded to reports of a crash on Route 45 south of University Drive around 1 a.m., and found the woman inside her heavily damaged Acura sedan with severe injuries. Emergency crews extricated her from the vehicle, and she was transported to Condell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The Lake County coroner identified the woman as Hannah Lebert of Lemont. An autopsy indicated she died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

The driver of the semi-truck, a 44-year-old man, was also taken to Condell Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The semi driver said the Acura, which was traveling southbound, lost control, crossed the median and collided head-on with his vehicle.

Preliminary findings suggested speed may have contributed to the Acura losing control, police said. Authorities reported no indication of impairment by the semi driver, who is cooperating with the investigation. Toxicology results are pending for both drivers.

Northbound lanes of Route 45 remained closed for several hours as crews worked to transfer the semi-truck's cargo and clear the wreckage. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.

What's next:

The Mundelein Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash with assistance from the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team. The Lake County Coroner's office has not yet released the name of the victim.
