New law makes it easier for Illinois residents to change their gender on birth certificates

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - It will soon be easier for people in Illinois to legally change the gender on their birth certificates.

A law signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker last week allows people to make the change without getting a note from a medical professional.

The law will go into effect on June 1, 2023.

All residents would need to do to make the change is submit a statement.
