(FoxNews.com) - A convicted rapist who shoved a 17-year-old girl off a New York City roof after she denied his sexual advances in 1989 was sentenced on Wednesday, two years after DNA evidence linked him to the decades-old murder.

Scott Parrilla was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the August 1989 killing of Noelis Bayanilla, Bronx District Attorney’s Office announced. The 48-year-old was not in court for the sentencing, where Bayanilla’s mother Joann Estanislau Caliz said the now-convicted killer deserved to “rot in jail,” the New York Post reported.

“I cannot put into words what you did to my only child. August 6, 1989, you cut off her life — and you cut out my heart that day,” Estanislau-Caliz said in court. “What you did I will never understand! You deserve to rot in jail for the rest of your life!”

Nearly three decades ago, Parrilla, then 19, walked Bayanilla home about 5 a.m. to her Bronx home and went up to the roof. He demanded Bayanilla have sex with her, but she refused, officials said.

“As she tried to leave the scene, a struggle ensued, and the defendant grabbed the victim and pushed her off the roof. She died from her injuries in Jacobi Hospital two days after the incident,” the district attorney’s office stated.

Several witnesses told investigators that they saw Parrilla with Bayanilla before her death, but lack of evidence prevented authorities from pursuing charges — leaving the case cold.

Bronx Homicide Squad reopened the case in 2015 after the teen’s friend called police with new information. Investigators eventually matched the DNA collected from Bayanilla’s fingernails to those of Parrilla that was already on file from a 1993 rape and attempted murder conviction in the Bronx.

Parilla was arrested in March 2016 as he was leaving Rikers Island after serving time for larceny.

“The defendant, who served time in prison for rape and other crimes while the killing of this teenage girl remained unsolved, will now spend many years in prison for taking her life,” Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said.
