Schaumburg man accused of fatally shooting relative mistaken for intruder on Christmas Day

Daniel Garcia, 52

A Schaumburg man has been charged after allegedly fatally shooting a relative he mistook for an intruder on Christmas Day, authorities said.

Daniel Garcia, 52, faces one count of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the incident.

Schaumburg police responded to a home in the 1800 block of Carlisle Court around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a person shot inside the residence. Upon arrival, officers found 50-year-old Kellie Barnett, of New Lenox, suffering from a gunshot wound to her torso.

Barnett was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined that Barnett was staying overnight with relatives at the home. Garcia, a homeowner, reportedly mistook her for an intruder and shot her.

A 9mm Glock semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene.

Garcia was taken into custody and transported to the Schaumburg Police Department for further questioning before being charged.

He appeared in court on Friday and was ordered to be detained until his next court date, which is set for Jan. 17 in Rolling Meadows.
