VIDEO: National Guard working on the wildfires from the air
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - The devastation from the Wine Country Fires is nearing a week long, and while the danger is still alarmingly high as fires continue to rage, the containment thus far and the lives that were saved are due to the tireless work of the men and women working day and night.
They’re fighting from the ground and they’re fighting from the sky to battle against the deadliest wildfire in California’s history. Thousands of firefighters are risking their lives in an attempt to tackle a scorched stretch of land the size of New York City.
A look into the efforts of the National Guard shows a helicopter dipping low to pulling water from a reservoir before dumping it over the flames. The water pouring from above cools down the blaze, giving the firefighters on the ground a better chance to put it to a halt.
