Chicago Cubs unveil new Blues Alternate uniform: 'The baby blues are back'

The Chicago Cubs are stepping back in time with a new uniform set to make its debut this April.

‘The Baby Blues are Back’

What we know:

The Cubs’ new Blues Alternate uniform, presented by Motorola Razr, celebrates the team’s history and Chicago’s influence on the electric blues movement, the club announced.

This marks the first time the Cubs will wear the baby blue color scheme on the field since 1981.

The uniform is set to debut on Saturday, April 5, and will be worn during home games on Fridays throughout the summer.

It will join the Cubs’ lineup of home white pinstripe and road gray uniforms, while the navy Wrigleyville jersey is set to be retired, the team said.

Jersey Timeline:

The Cubs were the first modern MLB team to wear baby blue in 1941 and again in 1942.

In 1976, the Cubs joined a growing number of MLB teams wearing baby blue, later donning a disco-era baby blue road jersey with white pinstripes from 1978 to 1981, the club said.

The team brought back this classic look for a throwback game on July 27, 2014, celebrating Wrigley Field’s 100th anniversary.

The Look:

The new Blues Alternate uniform has a chest patch that mixes classic Cubs uniform elements with typography inspired by blues-era instruments.

On the sleeve, there’s a guitar pick patch with custom lettering, split by an electric bolt—a shoutout to Chicago as the birthplace of electric blues.

The numbers and nameplate draw from vintage Cubs designs, topped off with decorative details that nod to blues-era style.

The socks pay a fun tribute to the legendary anthem "Sweet Home Chicago," complete with a six-string guitar stripe.

What they're saying:

Jennifer Martindale, the Cubs' Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications, shared her excitement about the new Blues Alternate uniform:

"The baby blues are back. We’re thrilled to revisit this popular colorway, while also paying tribute to the Blues music that has shaped our city’s cultural landscape," said Martindale. "This uniform is more than a celebration of the Cubs past; it's a nod to an iconic Chicago artform. We hope fans enjoy this unique blend of sports and music history."

What's next:

Fans can grab their Blues Alternate uniform starting Friday, Jan. 17, at Cubs Convention or at the Cubs Team Stores at Gallagher Way.
