Chicago weather: Severe storms possible Friday

It would be nice to have a day when a thunderstorm is in the forecast and there isn’t really any risk of it becoming severe.

Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case today, even though there are many failure modes for severe weather to occur over much of our area.

Chicago severe storms

Nevertheless, the storm prediction center has upgraded our viewing area to a level two "slight risk" of severe thunderstorms. Damaging straight-line winds would be the primary hazard. Prime time for any stronger storms would be late afternoon and evening. It is not out of the question that a shower sneaks into the area sometime later this morning.

Otherwise, skies will be partly sunny with high temperatures in the lower 80s and an uptick in humidity.

Tonight, scattered storms will move through the area, followed by partly to mostly cloudy skies and lows in the 60s.

What's next:

Saturday will be mostly sunny but near the lake there will be a small chance of a pop-up afternoon shower. It will be rather breezy. On Sunday it will be mostly sunny and pleasant. Highs tomorrow will be around 80 and in mid to upper 70s on Sunday.

Early next week looks quiet with highs Monday and Tuesday not far from 80. The next chance of rain will arrive on Wednesday, when showers and thunderstorms will be possible. Highs to be not far from 80.
