Cook County man jailed after 100-mph police chase in stolen car, weapons found: prosecutors
DUPAGE COUNTY - Authorities say a 19-year-old Dolton man led officers on a dangerous chase in a stolen car early Monday morning, ending with a crash, a foot pursuit and his eventual arrest.
The judge ruled Tuesday that Jujuan Barnes will remain jailed as he awaits trial on multiple felony charges.
What we know:
On Jan. 27, around 3 a.m., Villa Park police were notified that a black Dodge Charger valued at nearly $44,000 had just been stolen from a Kane County dealership and fled from St. Charles police.
Soon after, Villa Park officers located the Charger allegedly driven by Barnes. Attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful, and a high-speed chase ensued, reaching 106 mph near North Avenue and Ardmore Avenue.
The Charger was also being trailed by a white Infiniti, police said.
During the chase, officers stopped the Charger with spike strips at I-290 and North Avenue. However, the Infiniti avoided the strips.
Both vehicles then entered I-290 east before exiting at St. Charles Road into an Elmhurst residential neighborhood where Barnes and another person abandoned the Charger and hopped into the Infiniti. From there, the chase continued back onto I-290, reaching speeds of more than 100 mph.
The driver of the Infiniti lost control of the vehicle between St. Charles Road and Mannheim Road and crashed into a Volvo. Four suspects then fled on foot, but officers arrested two of them: Barnes, who was tasered, and another individual.
Police reportedly found a loaded Glock handgun, burglary tools, and reprogrammable key fobs in Barnes' backpack.
When checking out the Infiniti, officers discovered a loaded RDA handgun with an attached 50-round drum magazine and a loaded Glock 22 with a 50-round drum magazine.

What we don't know:
The identity of the other suspects, including the second person arrested with Barnes, is unknown.
What they're saying:
"The apprehension of the defendant in this case sends the crystal-clear message that in DuPage County, you cannot outrun the law," DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said.
"The allegations that Mr. Barnes led police on a 100-mph high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle while armed with a loaded handgun are extremely serious and will be met with the full force of the law. This behavior is extremely dangerous and puts not only the accused, but the officers involved as well as the motoring public at tremendous risk, as we saw in this case. Thankfully, the innocent victim that the Infiniti allegedly crashed into did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Once again, I urge everyone, if you hear sirens and see flashing lights behind you, pull over. Leading police on a high-speed chase is not the answer and will lead to serious consequences."
Villa Park Police Chief Mike Rivas praised the collaborative effort of multiple police departments, including those from Elmhurst, Hillside, and Oak Brook, which he said played a key role in Barnes’ arrest.
"If you are engaged in criminal activity in this area, expect the Villa Park police to do all in our power to arrest you and bring you to justice," Rivas said. "There is no telling what future serious crime was thwarted by this arrest."
What's next:
Barnes faces charges including aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He is set to appear in court on Feb. 24.
