1 dead after vehicle erupts in flames in Fox Lake, spreading to summer home

One person was killed after a vehicle erupted in flames in Fox Lake Tuesday afternoon. 

What we know:

Fox Lake police responded to a fire at Scenic Lane and Scenic Drive around 1:58 p.m., where a vehicle and a home were in flames.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle fully engulfed, with the fire spreading to the house. Firefighters from the Fox Lake Fire Protection District were already working to put it out.

The home was a summer residence and was vacant at the time.

After the fire was extinguished, a man’s body was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle.

Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle backed into the driveway and onto the front entryway stairs before catching fire. The flames then spread to the front of the home, causing extensive damage. 

What we don't know:

The cause of the fire remains unclear and the total cost of the damage has not been determined.

Additionally, authorities have not yet identified the victim.

What's next:

The incident remains under investigation by the Fox Lake Police Department with the help of the Lake County Coroner's Office, the State Fire Marshal and fire investigators.
