Glendale Heights man found guilty in 2021 murder following four-day trial

A 59-year-old Glendale Heights man was convicted Friday of first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the 2021 shooting death of Marek Krywko.

Goodwin was found guilty of one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery after a jury deliberated for 16 hours and following a four-day trial, according to prosecutors.

What we know:

On Aug. 2, 2021, Hanover Park police responded to a home on Pebblebeach Drive for a gunshot victim at 7:47 p.m.

As officers were responding, a second call came in for another gunshot victim at the same location, later identified as Krywko.

Police found the initial victim outside the home with a gunshot wound to her left thigh. Krywko was found inside with a gunshot wound to his left thigh that struck his femoral artery.

Both victims received first aid, but Krywko was unresponsive and later died at a hospital, authorities said.

Investigators learned Goodwin and two women were at the home to buy marijuana from Krywko. After the female victim gave Goodwin a bottle of water, he shot her, then shot Krywko before leaving the scene with the two women, authorities said.

Richard Goodwin, 59, of Glendale Heights. (DuPage County State's Attorney )

Goodwin was arrested on Aug. 25, 2021 and appeared in bond court on Aug. 31, 2021, where his bond was set at $500,000 full cash.

He's remained in custody at the DuPage County Jail since that time, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney.

What they're saying:

"This afternoon, after being presented with all the evidence, a jury found Richard Goodwin guilty of the senseless murder of Marek Krywko," DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. "I thank the jury for their service and for seeing through Mr. Goodwin’s claim of innocence. I also thank Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh for ensuring a fair trial for both sides. While a guilty verdict cannot bring Marek back to those who loved him, perhaps Marek’s surviving friends and relatives may find some measure of justice knowing that the man responsible for his murder will be held accountable. I thank the Hanover Park Police Department for their efforts on this case as well as the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, the Naperville and Carol Stream Police Departments and investigators from the DuPage M.E.R.I.T. for their assistance. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Louisa Nuckolls, Alyssa Rabulinski and Daniel Orescanin for their efforts in securing a guilty verdict against Mr. Goodwin for the murder of Marek Krywko."

What's next:

Goodwin is scheduled for a court appearance on March 4 for post-trial motions and the return of the pre-sentence report, prosecutors said.
