Two people from the suburbs were arrested during a traffic stop this week after police found over half a kilogram of cocaine inside their vehicle, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Melissa M. Coquillard, 33, of Hampshire, has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and speeding.

Martin Gonzalez, 36, of South Elgin, has been charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The charges stem from a traffic stop that occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday at Interstate 94 and Route 22 near Lincolnshire.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Dwight Arwood and his K9 partner, Duke, assisted in the stop.

K9 Duke conducted a "free-air sniff" around the vehicle and alerted his handler to the presence of narcotics.

Deputies then searched the vehicle and found over half a kilogram, about 578.5 grams, of powder cocaine, the sheriff's office said.

The driver, identified as Coquillard, and the passenger, Gonzalez, were arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail and charged accordingly.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed petitions to detain both Gonzalez and Coquillard in custody while awaiting trial.

Both are due in court Friday afternoon.
