Indiana has now had more than 1,800 people die with confirmed or presumed coronavirus infections since the state’s first death was recorded just more than two months ago, health officials said Tuesday.

Most of Indiana’s 57 new confirmed COVID-19 deaths occurred between Friday and Monday, increasing the total number of such deaths to 1,678, according to the Indiana State Department of Health.

The other deaths date back as far as April 17. Two occurred on April 22, making it the state’s deadliest coronavirus day with 50 fatalities.

The health department statistics added two deaths from probable infections of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. That brings the total of such fatalities to 146 and raises Indiana’s confirmed or presumed deaths to 1,824 since the first one was recorded on March 15.

About 75 percent of Indiana’s deaths have involved people ages 70 and older, according to the health department.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.
