Knife-wielding man fatally shot by officer in west suburb, police say

A 31-year-old Crest Hill man was fatally shot by police Sunday afternoon after officers encountered him armed with two knives.

The shooting happened at 3:47 p.m. Sunday in the 8500 block of Cermak Road. 

When officers arrived and found the man, he was armed with two knives. One officer shot the man to protect another individual, police said. 

Officers immediately provided medical aid before the man was transported to an area hospital. 

He died from his injuries a short time later. His identity has not been released.

"We want to assure the community that this was an isolated domestic incident and there is no broader threat to the public," police said in a statement. "Our officers acted to protect the safety of others present at the scene." 

North Riverside police and the State Police Public Integrity Task Force are investigating the incident.
