Chicago area man fatally shot his wife during argument, prosecutors say
LOMBARD, Ill. - A west suburban man shot his wife in the head during an argument early Friday morning, and then called 911, according to local prosecutors.
The suspect, Charles Witter, 81, is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the deadly shooting, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
What happened?
What we know:
Police responded to a home in the 500 block of North Clarendon Avenue in Lombard around 12:38 a.m. on Friday after the suspect called police.
Officers met Witter at the door and arrested him.
They found his wife, Helen Witter, 80, unconscious and lying on her back with her head on a pillow and her mouth open.
There was a "significant injury" to the right side of her head where blood was coming out from.
She was taken to a local hospital but was pronounced dead at 1:17 a.m.
Investigators learned Witter and his wife were in bed and got into an argument. During the argument, he allegedly retrieved a gun from a drawer in his nightstand and shot his wife once.
He then called 911.
On Saturday, a DuPage County judge ruled that Witter be kept in jail as he awaits trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 10.
What we don't know:
Police did not say what was the cause of the argument that led to the fatal shooting.
