New data from pet sitting platform TrustedHousesitters has revealed the most popular dog breed in each state.

According to TrustedHousesitters, the findings show that geography and lifestyle help determine which breeds people choose, with some breeds topping the list in many states and others emerging as "unique local favorites."

Labrador retrievers dominate list

Labrador retrievers were the favorite breeds in a whopping 28 states.

TrustedHousesitters says labs are happiest when they're active and spending time with their humans, "making them the perfect companion for those who love an active lifestyle."

Working breeds and the great outdoors

Alaska and Oklahoma chose Australian Cattle Dog and German Shepherd Dog, respectively, "both active breeds that thrive in states known for outdoor adventure and open landscapes."

Hotter state, smaller dog

Chihuahuas are the favorite breed in Arizona and Utah. Experts say their size, short coats and big ears make them better suited for warmer climates.

Unique favorites

A few states stood out with their choices: Rhode Island, for example, favors French Bulldogs, while Kentucky prefers Miniature Schnauzers and North Dakota likes Cockapoos.
