Police: 1 killed, 16 wounded in shootings Monday

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - One man was killed and at least 16 others were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago, officials said.

Two people were shot — one fatally — and two others were injured Monday night in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, fire officials said.

Two men, ages 38 and 39, were in a car traveling westbound in the 2000 block of West 70th Place at 8:49 p.m. when someone opened fire, according to Chicago Police.

The 39-year-old man was shot in the back of the head and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

The younger man suffered three gunshot wounds to the side and one to the left arm and was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

Two other people, whose ages and genders were not known early Tuesday, were taken from the scene to Holy Cross Hospital, where they were listed in good condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department. Additional details on those victims and the nature of their injuries were not immediately available.

The most recent nonfatal shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the thigh in the 7000 block of South Wabash, according to police. He later showed up at Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in good condition.

About 30 minutes earlier, a man was shot in another West Englewood neighborhood attack. The 21-year-old was shot in the right shoulder about 9:45 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Laflin, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

Nearly an hour before that, four boys were shot as they were standing outside in the West Side Austin neighborhood. About 8:52 p.m., the four — ages 12, 14, 15 and 16 — were standing near the corner of Washington and Waller when another male walked up and opened fire, police said. The 12-year-old and 16-year-old were both shot in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. The 14-year-old was also shot in the abdomen, while the 15-year-old was shot in the right leg and they were both taken to Stroger Hospital. Police said the conditions of all four had stabilized late Monday.

About 8:20 p.m. in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, a man suffered two gunshot wounds to the right thigh. The 22-year-old was walking on the sidewalk in the 7900 block of South Indiana, when he was approached by two people who fired shots as he ran away, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Monday evening, two men were shot in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side. The men, both 20 years old, were standing outside in the 10200 block of South Indiana at 5:46 p.m. when someone walked up, pulled out a gun and fired six to seven shots before running away, police said. Both men suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and were taken to Stroger Hospital, where they were both listed in good condition.

Thirty minutes earlier, a 20-year-old man was shot in West Garfield Park. He was walking down the street in the 4200 block of West Madison at 5:17 p.m. when someone ran up to him and fired shots. The suspect then got into a red vehicle and drove off, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and showed up at Loretto Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

In the Far South Side West Pullman neighborhood, a 19-year-old man was walking down the street at 1:45 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Eggleston when a light-colored four-door car pulled up and three occupants got out. One of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired shots, according to police. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the right hip and was taken in good condition to Christ Medical Center.

About 10 a.m., a man was injured in a Little Village neighborhood drive-by shooting on the Southwest Side. The 22-year-old was outside in the 2800 block of South Komensky when someone opened fire from a dark car, according to police. He was shot in the hip and buttocks and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Monday morning, a 20-year-old woman was shot and critically wounded in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood. She was inside a vehicle that was hit by gunfire about 5:15 a.m. in the 800 block of North Kostner, police said. She was shot in the chest and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

A 29-year-old man was shot in a separate Humboldt Park attack shortly after 3 a.m. He was riding in the backseat of an SUV going south in the 1200 block of North Homan when a black car pulled up and someone inside fired shots, according to police. He suffered a graze wound to his back and was taken in the SUV to Norwegian American Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Monday’s first shooting happened about 30 minutes earlier when a teenage girl was shot in the North Side Rogers Park neighborhood. The 17-year-old girl was riding as passenger in a vehicle about 2:45 a.m. in the 7100 block of North Clark when another car pulled alongside and someone inside opened fire, police said. The girl was struck in the back and taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she was listed in serious condition.
