Shooting on I-80/94 in NW Indiana involves Lake County Sheriff's deputies

HAMMOND, Ind. - An investigation is underway after shots were fired during a traffic stop early Tuesday morning on Interstate 80/94 near the Indiana-Illinois state line.

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded shortly after midnight to assist the Indiana State Police with backup during a traffic stop on eastbound I-80/94 at Indianapolis Boulevard.

Officials confirmed shots were fired during the incident, though few additional details have been released.

Two Lake County sheriff’s officers who were involved were not wounded, authorities said. Both officers were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and are expected to be medically cleared.

In accordance with department policy, the officers will be placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
