Woman hit by stray bullet talks about pain, trauma
CHICAGO (Fox 32 News) - On a weekend when at least five people were shot dead in Chicago, and 31 others wounded, a South Shore woman shared what happened when she was shot a few weeks ago.
Darlister "Dali" Smith, 65, was hit by a stray bullet when she parked her car after going to church. The bullet is still lodged in her chest near her heart.
"Physically, mentally, I don't know when I'm going to be the same," Smith said.
She had gotten caught between two people in front of her building who were shooting at each other.
"I was praying, God, please deliver me. Please, Lord, let me live," she said. "And the next thing I knew, I felt a sting in my back and I knew I had been shot. I'm like, 'This can't be happening to me.' Why are these young black people hurting each other. Why?
She was hospitalized and underwent painful surgery, suffering a cracked rib in the process.
"They cut me straight down. I looked like I'd been gutted like a pig," she said.
She said she is traumatized and scared to drive.
Her daughter wants justice.
"These people, they will be caught, they must be caught, and we will not stop until you are put behind bars," Sasheen Smith said.
