Cicada invasion inspiring Illinois artists and insect advocates

Illinois is highly anticipating the arrival of the cicadas. And while some are dreading the thousands that will be converging in our areas, others are appreciating them for their uniqueness and turning them into art. How loud do cicadas get?

Certain species of cicadas in North America can produce calls reaching levels of around 100 decibels or higher, akin to the noise produced by a lawnmower or a passing jet aircraft.
