Chicago weather: Snow possible today, freezing rain possible tomorrow
CHICAGO - Today is the calm before the possible storm.
Chicago Weather Forecast
What we know:
Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with temperatures not going much of anywhere through the day. Our high will go in the books as 33 degrees which occurred at midnight.
The wildcard for today is the possibility of some lake-effect snow blowing through Chicagoland. This would be light and not create travel havoc. There is also no guarantee this will occur. However it is showing up on one of the computer models I like.
Future Forecast
What's next:
The main concern will be tomorrow and, more specifically, tomorrow evening through the overnight period. While there could be a few spotty light snow showers during the day on Wednesday, the chance for freezing rain ramps up at night. There is still quite a bit of doubt over how much, if any, freezing rain reaches our area. Most computer models show some freezing rain and any freezing rain is not good news on untreated surfaces.
The likelihood of a bona fide ice storm remains very low. This would be the sort of ice event which would take down trees and powerlines. That amount of ice in this case is a very low-probability event.

Chicago weather: Freezing rain, slick roads possible this week
Chicagoans should prepare for a messy week with two winter storms on the way.
Precipitation will end at some point early Thursday morning, but there will possibly be impacts to the morning commute as a result of any ice that has fallen on untreated surfaces.
The good news regarding Thursday is that temperatures will be on the way up promoting melting of any ice that has accumulated. Highs may not be far from 40 degrees, in fact.
Friday looks to be a quiet and colder day with highs close to freezing.
The next storm system is another potential mix of freezing rain and snow which would arrive on Saturday. At this point, major snowfall amounts are unlikely and the significant icing risk remains minimal. As of this writing there is no winter weather advisory in effect for our area, but that might change.
