Bystander shot during carjacking in South Loop

FOX 32 NEWS - A man who stood with Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson last week to honor a victim of Chicago’s violence was himself a victim of violence on Tuesday.

Leon Jackson was shot and wounded after he came across an armed carjacking in the South Loop.

Six days ago, Jackson stood with friends and family of Blair Holt to name a street in Holt's memory. It was the 10th anniversary of the day that the Julian High School honors student  had been shot and killed while trying to protect a young woman from a gang shooting on a CTA bus. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson spoke just before Jackson about the impact of Blair Holt's death.

“It just underscores how tenuous life can be,” Johnson said.

It's a message that's taken on new meaning for Jackson. The 27-year-old was leaving a nightclub around 1:30 a.m. when he and a friend came across three men wearing ski masks, who were carjacking a BMW. One of the carjackers told them not to run, but they did. Jackson was shot in the back. Police say he was taken to a hospital where he was stabilized.

Blair Holt's mother, Annette Holt, told FOX 32 that Jackson is a good kid, that he's been at the family's side ever since Blair was shot, and he's almost like another son.

Jackson's been working for a food and beverage company, which services sporting events and concerts. Last week, he talked about how time has flown since Blair Holt's death.

Annette Holt said she's heard nothing regarding Jackson's condition. FOX 32’s efforts to reach his family were unsuccessful.

The 28-year-old man who was driving the BMW was not injured during the carjacking, police said. The suspects were described as black males who were all wearing masks.

There have been no arrests related to the carjacking and the shooting.
