Chicago family robbed at knifepoint, daughter sexually assaulted

It was a terrifying two hours for a southeast side family.

Now, Chicago police are looking for a group of young men who burst into the home, tied up and robbed the residents at knifepoint, and sexually assaulted a woman.

Stojana and Desmir Mitrovic, both Serbian immigrants, were at home with their daughter Sunday evening when 65-year-old Stojana went outside to shovel the snow outside their East Side home.

She says a neighbor volunteered to help, and when they went back inside to warm up, the door left slightly ajar, four young men burst into the house wielding a knife.

"And three got a mask, and just come in and ask me for the money. And say don't tell nothing. Give me the money,” Stojana said.

The men took cash, credit cards, jewelry and electronics. Then they turned on 67-year-old Desmir, who suffers from polio, and cut his hand trying to take his ring.

"He say give me the ring. My husband said I'm not giving it. He say if you not give me ring I cut your finger. He got a big knife,” Stojana said.

She says the men then forced her and the neighbor downstairs and tied them up with duct tape.

One of the men then sexually assaulted her adult daughter. Stojana says the robbers were in the house for two hours.

"I'm very scared. Took everything. I don't care. I still alive,” Stojana said.

The Mitrovic's came to Chicago from Serbia in the 1970s, and have been living in their home for the past 40 years. They had never had any trouble before.

Chicago police say they are continuing to investigate, but so far have no suspects in custody.
