Chicago swim coach charged, got $30,000 in pool rentals

CHICAGO - A swim coach at a Chicago high school collected nearly $30,000 by leasing the pool to outside groups, investigators said.

The school district's inspector general didn't identify the coach Monday in his annual report but said the allegations led to criminal charges. The Chicago Sun-Times, citing court records, identified him as Andy Parro, who now is the swim coach at Illinois Institute of Technology.

Emails seeking comment were sent to the college and Parro.

Parro was the swim coach at Whitney Young High School from 2009-2018, winning six league championships. The inspector general said the coach made side deals with three outside groups that wanted to use the pool.

“Each of his rental agreements with the outside groups was off-the-books, violating CPS rules governing the rental of CPS property," the inspector general said, referring to Chicago Public Schools.

The coach was “essentially stealing money that should have gone to the school,” the report said.

The school principal was suspended for five days without pay while the assistant principal was given a written reprimand, the inspector general said.
